Understanding Hip Health
What is Hip Dysplasia?
At its heart, hip dysplasia is a developmental issue where the ball-and-socket joint of the hip doesn't grow in perfect synchrony. Instead of a smooth, snug fit, the joint becomes loose, which can lead to wear and tear over time. While it sounds technical, we like to think of it as a growth journey that needs a little extra guidance.
Genetics & Environment
Hip health is a complex puzzle. While genetics provide the foundation, environment plays a massive role—up to 60-70% in some cases. This is why no breeder, no matter how diligent, can fully eliminate the risk. It is a shared responsibility between the breeder’s selection and the owner’s care.
The Bellhaven Approach
We take hip scoring and responsible breeding seriously, selecting parents with strong scores to give our puppies the best possible start. Once they join your family, you become the guardian of their health. Managing their weight, providing a balanced diet, and ensuring appropriate, low-impact exercise during their growth months are the most powerful tools you have.

When to Wait
If your pup is still bright, playful, and drinking water, a single loose stool isn't always an emergency. Common mild causes include the stress of moving to a new home, over-excitement, or scavenging in the yard. In many cases, a short 'wait and see' period with digestive rest is appropriate for our Bellhaven puppy families.
Home Care & Diet
For mild upset, start a bland diet of boiled chicken breast and white rice (75% rice, 25% chicken). Offer small, frequent meals rather than one large one. Ensure constant access to fresh water to prevent dehydration. As they improve, gradually transition back to their regular food over 3-7 days to allow their system to adjust smoothly.
When to See a Vet
Seek veterinary care immediately if you notice: blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, lethargy/depression, or a refusal to drink. If diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours in a young puppy, do not wait. In Victoria, we recommend keeping your local vet's after-hours number handy for peace of mind.
