The Foundation of ResponsibleÂ
Breeding and Important info for new ownersÂ
We believe that responsible breeding is more than just producing healthy puppies; it is about upholding the integrity of the breed and ensuring a lifetime of well-being. Our standards are built on rigorous health screenings, ethical socialization, and a deep commitment to the welfare of every animal in our care.
Information for New Owners
Bringing home a Bellhaven puppy is exciting, and we’re here to make it simple. Use this guide as a starting point, and remember you can always reach out to us with questions.
Start your puppy on a high-quality puppy kibble approved for Australian standards. Maintaining a consistent feeding schedule is key to healthy growth and steady energy.
Early socialisation is vital for Bellhaven puppies. Introduce them to new sights and sounds gently, and begin basic obedience to build a lifelong bond.
Stay on top of vet visits and parasite prevention, especially in regional Australia. Regular checks ensure your puppy stays active and healthy.
What to Bring on Pickup
On pickup day, please bring a secure lead and collar, a towel or blanket for the crate or car seat, some fresh water, and a safe travel crate if you have one. If you’re travelling a long distance, plan regular toilet breaks and keep your puppy cool and calm. We’ll provide a small comfort item that smells like mum and littermates to help your puppy settle.
The First 48 Hours at Home
Keep the first two days quiet and simple. Set up a safe space with a bed, water, and a puppy-safe area. Stick to the same food and feeding times we’ve been using, and let your puppy explore one room at a time. Expect extra naps, a few accidents, and some crying at night – this is all normal. Gentle reassurance, a calm routine, and early crate training will help your Bellhaven puppy settle quickly.
When to Contact Us
We’re here for you long after pickup day. Please contact us if your puppy has ongoing diarrhoea, vomiting, won’t eat for more than one meal, seems very flat or unwell, or if you’re worried about behaviour such as fear, reactivity, or biting that doesn’t improve with gentle training. No question is too small – we’d much rather you ask. We can work with your vet or trainer to support you and your puppy.
Bellhaven uses DNA testing to check for known hereditary conditions in our Border Collies. While this drastically reduces the risk of these specific issues being passed on, it doesn't mean a puppy is immune to all health problems. No breeder can guarantee a dog will never have health issues, but our testing provides the best possible start for your puppy’s future health.
Healthy growth requires a balance of feeding, sleep, and consistent toilet training. Safe exercise is important to protect growing joints—avoid long runs or excessive jumping early on. Establish a routine early and use gentle, positive reinforcement training to help your puppy learn and thrive in their new home.
Owning a Border Collie is a lifetime commitment with expected costs including vet bills, food, training, and insurance. Ensure your council registration and microchip details are current. At Bellhaven, we expect puppies to be returned to us if your circumstances ever change, as we remain committed to our dogs for their entire lives.
