WHAT IS THE C.S.P.?

The Once-Only Window: 3 to 16 Weeks

The Critical Socialisation Period (C.S.P.) is a unique developmental window where a puppy's brain is like a sponge, permanently shaping their life-long temperament. At Bellhaven, we utilise this once-only opportunity to build resilience and confidence through positive, warm, and responsible early exposure.

FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFE

Safe Exposure & Socialisation Guidelines

Early socialisation is not about meeting every dog; it's about positive, controlled exposure to the world. Here is how we start, and how you continue.

🔈

Environmental Sounds

Gentle introduction to household noises like vacuums, hair dryers, and television, alongside natural farm sounds and distant thunder recordings.

Birth to 16 Weeks

🧼

Cooperative Handling

Grooming & Vets

Preparing for life: checking ears, touching paws, and introductory brushing sessions making future veterinary visits stress-free.

🌱

Tactile Textures

Puppies walk on varied surfaces: soft grass, wood decks, crinkly tunnels, and gravel paths to build physical confidence and proprioception.

Positive Foundations

Reward Foundations

Building a 'want-to-work' attitude through food rewards, toy play, and verbal praise, laying the early groundwork for future training.

Bellhaven Socialisation Pillars

The foundation of a resilient Border Collie is built between 3 and 16 weeks—a once-in-a-lifetime window for positive growth.

The 100/100/100 Idea

The Critical Socialisation Period (C.S.P.) is our most vital tool. We aim for 100 people, 100 dogs, and 100 new experiences by 16 weeks. This concentrated window of curiosity ensures your puppy views the world as a friendly, safe place before fear responses solidify.

Vaccination & Safety

Safety is Bellhaven's priority. We balance exposure with vaccination milestones, choosing secure environments to avoid health risks. We move at the puppy's pace, ensuring they remain confident and never overwhelmed during their Victorian adventures.

Fear Periods & Resilience

Negative experiences during the Critical Socialisation Period can stay with a dog for life, shaping how they react to new people, places, and situations as adults. That’s why we focus on gentle exposure, positive reinforcement, and simple “startle‑recovery” moments.

If a puppy is startled or unsure, we don’t push them through it. Instead, we help them pause, reset, and re‑engage in a calm, supported way. This turns what could have been a fear‑forming moment into a confidence‑building one.

These small, positive recoveries teach puppies that the world is safe, new things aren’t overwhelming, and they can bounce back from surprises — building emotional resilience that stays with them for life.

Puppy Yoga at Bellhaven

Early socialisation is one of the most important parts of raising a confident, well‑adjusted Border Collie — and Puppy Yoga is one of the gentle, positive ways we help your puppy prepare for the big world ahead.

During these calm sessions, your puppy meets new people, hears new sounds, and experiences a different environment, all while being closely supervised and supported. Everything is done at the puppies’ pace. If they want to explore, they can. If they want cuddles, they get them. If they need a rest, they’re given space and time.

These experiences help your puppy build confidence, reduce future fearfulness, and strengthen their ability to cope with new situations once they go home to you. It’s a beautiful, welfare‑led step in their development — and one of the many ways we set your Bellhaven puppy up for success.

Your puppy’s wellbeing always comes first, and Puppy Yoga is simply another way we help them grow into the happy, secure companions they’re meant to be.
