Essential Routine Care

This page covers everyday care for Border Collie puppies, designed as a quick resource for our puppy buyers. We want to ensure you feel confident and prepared as you welcome your new companion home.

Why Grooming Matters

Grooming your four-legged friend is about more than just removing loose hair. It is a vital opportunity to check their overall health. While brushing, take a moment to look at their eyes, ears, teeth, and paw pads. Regular sessions keep their skin healthy and their coat beautifully glossy.

Double Coat Care

Border Collies come in two varieties: rough and smooth. Both feature a ‘double coat’—a soft undercoat and a water-resistant top layer. Brushing a few times a week manages normal shedding, but during spring and autumn, they will ‘blow’ their coat. During these seasonal heavy sheds, daily brushing is essential to keep your home hair-free and your pup comfortable.

Essential Nail & Paw Care

  1. Check for Clicks: If you hear clicking on the floor, it's time for a trim.
  2. Trim the Tips: Only cut the very end of the nail to avoid the 'quick' (the blood vessel).
  3. Mind the Pad Hair: Every few months, carefully trim the excess fur between their paw pads.
  4. Expert Help: If you feel unsure, your vet or a professional groomer is always happy to help.
Benefits of Regular Maintenance
  • Prevents painful mats and tangles that can irritate delicate skin.
  • Allows for early detection of potential health issues or skin conditions.
  • Keeps your pup's coat shiny, healthy, and manageable year-round.
  • Reduces excessive hair in your home and keeps bathing sessions easier.

Nail and Paw Care

1. Check

Look for clicking sounds or nails touching the ground to know when it's time for a maintenance check.

2. Trim

Clip only the tip of the nail to avoid the sensitive quick; seek help from a groomer if you feel unsure.

3. Tidy

Every couple of months, use straight scissors to gently trim the hair growing between your pup's paw pads.
